Hot child in the city: Rita Ora lets it all hang out in low-cut dress as she basks in the sunshine Down Under

She's spent most of the winter splitting her time between chilly New York and Europe.

With her bleach blonde hair in plaits and her signature red lipstick on, it appeared Rita wasn't wearing a bra under her negligee-style dress.

The star, who performed at Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday, looked far from jet-lagged as she bought a new pair on sunglasses and chatted on her mobile phone.

Her change of outfit came after she arrived at Sydney's Kingsford-Smith Airport after her long-haul flight from Paris in a pair of cartoon slogan-print trousers and baseball shirt.

Understandably, she wasn't in the mood to be photographed after spending the best part of a day on a plane and tried to hide behind her passport.

Rita is in Australia to perform at the Future Music Festival this weekend.

She's also planning lots of promotional activities, including an appearance on breakfast show Sunrise.

'I was like, "Of course, I'd love to."

'And I think it summed up a great year for me, life kind of changed last year, so I did feel like a cool little leader when I was playing that role."

PGA Tour joins PGA America in opposition to proposed 'belly putter' ban

The PGA Tour has come out against the proposed ban of anchored putters from 2016 - but is not saying yet what it will do if the ban comes into force.

The rule-making Royal and Ancient Club and United States Golf Association are in a period of consultation at the moment, but the US tour's announcement will probably give them real cause for thought, especially as the PGA of America are also against the move.

Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said today: 'Our player advisory council looked at it twice. We had the USGA come in and make a presentation to a player meeting in San Diego and the USGA made a presentation to our board.

In the firing line: Keegan Bradley is one of the players who uses the controversial 'belly putter'In the firing line: Keegan Bradley is one of the players who uses the controversial 'belly putter'

'We researched and looked at it and articulated our position at the end of last week to the USGA and shared that thinking also with the R&A.

'Essentially where the PGA Tour came down was that they did not think that banning anchoring was in the best interest of golf or the PGA Tour.'

Finchem also stated that 13 of the 15 players on their advisory council were against the ban.

'I would note that the PGA of America came to the same conclusion after consultation with their membership. The Golf Course Owners Association came to the same conclusion as well,' Finchem said.

'I think the essential thread that went through the thinking of the players and our board of directors and others was that in the absence of data or any basis to conclude that there is a competitive advantage to be gained by using anchoring - and given the amount of time that anchoring has been in the game, that there was no over-riding reason to go down that road.

Not in our name: The PGA has come out against the proposed ban of anchored putters from 2016Not in our name: The PGA has come out against the proposed ban of anchored putters from 2016

'An awful lot of amateurs today use anchoring and a number of players on the PGA Tour who have grown up with a focus on perfecting the anchoring method, if you will, did so after the USGA on multiple occasions approved the method years ago.

'For us to join in supporting a ban we think as a direction is unfair to both groups of individuals.

'We have worked with the USGA over the last 20 years on a wide range of rules issues.

'I continue to hope that regardless of where this matter ends up that it gets there after a process that is good-natured, open and not contrary or divisive. That's certainly our intention.

Level playing field: Tim Finchem says the ban would be unfair to the scores of juniors who have grown up using the putterLevel playing field: Tim Finchem says the ban would be unfair to the scores of juniors who have grown up using the putter

'We hold the USGA in the highest regard as a key part of the game of golf. We don't attempt to denigrate that position in any way whatsoever.

'It's just on this issue we think if they were to move forward they would be making a mistake.'

Asked what happens if the ban happens, Finchem added: 'I don't know because we have, I think carefully and intentionally, avoided at this point getting into a discussion about that issue.

'We have not even begun that discussion.

'This is a very subjective area. Everybody has an opinion about it and we certainly respect everybody's opinion.

Anchor men: Fred Couples of the United States is another player who uses the belly putterAnchor men: Fred Couples of the United States is another player who uses the belly putter

'The PGA of America has concluded that it will hurt the game with certain numbers of amateurs. We agree with that.

'One thing we know for sure on the professional side is the professional game globally is stronger than it's ever been today and that on the heels of having anchoring as part of it for the last 30 or 40 years.

'It certainly hasn't been a negative. You can't point to one negative impact of anchoring.

'Now some people might say I don't think you should anchor or I don't think you should do that or I don't think you should do that, but it hasn't translated into a negative thing for the sport.

'That's why we're having trouble with it.'

In reaction to the news, former Europe Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie warned the proposed ban could 'open up a whole new can of worms.'

'It's a very dangerous situation we are getting ourselves into and I do hope they can sort this out very, very quickly,' said Montgomerie on Sky Sports.

Warning: Former Europe Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie said the proposed ban could open the door for inconsistency between tournaments and further rule changesWarning: Former Europe Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie said the proposed ban could open the door for inconsistency between tournaments and further rule changes

'I thought, as we all did, that the rules of golf were set by the R&A and the USGA. Tim Finchem has obviously thought otherwise. Whether the European Tour think that or not has to be debated too.

'I think we should go with what the R&A and USGA feel. Whether the long putter should have been banned 20 years ago or not, it should be banned now.

'We should abide by that. To now go against that and say 'my players aren't going to go by that' then what happens when you come to USGA events or the British Open?

'Does that mean you have to use a different club?

'He's said 'we abide by the rules of golf, but I think we are going to change this one'.

'Does that mean other rules can change as well? We want to play as one under the same rules.

'The R&A and USGA have served the game of golf for a long, long time and long may that continue.'

Is the war over? Johnson & Johnson heiress 'reconciles with ex-boyfriend' following bitter six-year custody battle over adopted son

Johnson & Johnson heiress Libet Johnson has apparently reconciled with her ex-boyfriend, Dr Lionel Bissoon, after an arduous six-year custody battle over their nine-year-old son William, whom they brought to the U.S. from Cambodia in 2003.

The former couple, who have both been fighting for the legal right to be his adopted parents, have finally been granted court approval, according to the New York Post.

While the romantic status of their relationship is not clear, Ms Johnson and Dr Bissoon have apparently ended their embittered fight and are now amicably sharing responsibility for the child.

Libet Johnson and Dr Lionel BissoonReunited? Libet Johnson and Dr Lionel Bissoon (pictured with William in happier times) have finally been granted the right to adopt their Cambodian son, and are now apparently reconciled

The pair tried to legally adopt William together after Ms Johnson - who was in the boy's home country of Cambodia to start a $10 million charity for its orphans - brought him to America as a toddler under a humanitarian visa.

At that time, however, the U.S. had a moratorium on Cambodian adoptions.

To circumvent this law, Ms Johnson's then-boyfriend, weight-loss guru Dr Bissoon, first claimed citizenship in Trinidad and Tobago and then tried to adopt the child in his native country, but both schemes fell through.

Then after the relationship ended in 2005, Ms Johnson sought and won sole adoption of William without informing her former flame, sparking a legal battle.

Ms Johnson initially blocked her ex from seeing William, but in 2007 it was revealed that she had failed to tell the judge that she and Dr Bissoon had previously tried to adopt the child together.

She had also neglected to inform Judge Glen of her recent stint in rehab for alcohol.

The court then rescinded its decision, ruling that Dr Bissoon was, in fact, the child's legal adopted father, and Ms Johnson his primary caregiver.

After a series of back-and-forth appeals, The Post reports that Judge Kristin Booth Glen reached a new decision in July that allows them both legal rights to adopt the child.

A co-parenting deal reached by the pair in 2011 states: 'The parties now wish to put the litigation between them over the past years behind them, to heal the wounds caused by that litigation.'

The parenting agreement also declares that the couple will 'provide to William the security and other benefits that come with having two loving parents, and to parent William jointly from this time forward with a commitment to serving his best interests.'

While it is unclear whether Ms Johnson and Dr Bissoon will resume a romantic relationship, DNAinfo reports that after the latest ruling, Ms Johnson and Dr Bissoon began negotiations 'much like that of two divorced parents... with both sharing, however uncomfortably at times, decision-making authority.'

Judge Glen acknowledges that a co-parenting adoption is in William's best interests.

'Adoption will offer such a child numerous economic benefits, including the significant right of financial support from both of his parents,' her decision states.

Female Sunglasses the Hottest Product on Earth

Female sunglasses are the hottest product on earth, there is certainly no doubt about that. What makes them the hottest on earth is a myth. However, if we study it closely, that enigma might as well be not that difficult to solve. Besides the fact that female likes to dress up and care more about their appearances more than their male counterparts, there is also a whole social-economic background for them becoming the most selling accessories on our planet.

Traditionally, the female are considered weaker and less important sex compared to their opposite sex. Although that mis-conception has been abandoned long ago, the female gender do feel the continuous urge to be more physically attractive and appealing to attract their ideal partner. Besides, the increasingly competitive environment that females find themselves in at workplaces are urging our incredibly intelligent and successful working ladies to care more about how they look in public, which has a great deal to do with confidence. Female sunglasses meet that huge demand by adding to their faces what could be a defining image improvement that not only help them get by just fine in the hot summer sun, but more importantly to light up their faces while they're having them on.

Typical female sunglasses that immediately puts you on the map include the universally popular wraparounds. Those shades seem to be ladies' special lovers since they put that superstar type of vibe on their faces that they all want. Another style that has remained female's favourite is the foxy cat eye sunglasses. With a touch of playfulness and a sexy appeal that make anyone who wears it the center of spotlight immediately, cat eye sunglasses will inevitably keep on attracting more and more female wearers as long as they keep buying them. 'This is where I always should have been!' Kim Kardashian reveals plans to wed Kanye West as she shows off her curves in Cosmo

After two failed marriages and a baby on the way, she is hoping her current beau could be the one she spends the rest of her life with.

And as she flaunts her rounded tummy in a new magazine photo shoot – which took place just days before she announced her first pregnancy – Kim Kardashian has admitted she and Kanye West have intentions to tie the knot.

Appearing on the cover of Cosmopolitan, the 32-year-old expectant mother flaunts her tiny baby bump as she dons a pair of high waist white briefs with a matching crop top and black cardigan.

With her ample cleavage and thighs out for all to see, the curvy star said in the interview about her latest love, who she has been friends with for almost a decade: ‘Sometimes you’re just not ready. A person could have it all, and you’re not ready for it all.

‘But this is where I probably always should have been…[marriage] is something I know that we both want in our future, but I don’t have this sense of urgency about it.

'I have this best friend who understands me and helps me through all my tough experiences, and vice versa, you know? It just feels like this is it for me.’

The reality TV star is shot in another ensemble wearing a champagne colour mini-dress with a plunging neck line to flaunt her bust which have reportedly increased from a size 36D to 36G.

This time she opts to disguise her rounded tummy by cinching in her waist with a white tie.

Her fringed hair is tousled as she poses provocatively with her arms behind her head.

Expecting to welcome her child – rumoured to be a girl – in July, she spoke about her long-term desire to start a family.

‘I’ve always said that I wanted kids, but I don’t think I ever would have been ready until now.’
But it took her some time to realise having a child doesn’t necessarily have to be done in the traditional way.

On being judgmental when eldest sister Kourtney got pregnant in 2009, she confessed: ‘I was like, “You’re not married! How could you do this?” I was really firm and strict. But she was like, “Marriage isn’t what I want.” And later, I realised she had a better family life than I did.’

Kim is currently still married to her NBA star ex Kris Humphries – who she announced she was divorcing after 72 days of being wed - and is likely to still be legally attached when she child is born.

While Kim doesn’t think it’s a wise idea to get hitched within a month of meeting someone like her younger sibling Khloe did with basketball player Lamar Odom, she is adamant that perfection in a relationship can be achieved with time.

She continued: ‘I saw fast marriages like Khloe and Lamar’s and that was what seemed to work. [Now] I say give it a good six months before you commit. Feelings change, even if it seems so lustful.

‘I used to think, Well, can you really have it all? The truth, the excitement, and the passion? Now I know you can.’

With motherhood on the horizon, the business woman is planning on cutting down her schedule into more manageable chunks.

Although she continues to attend events and put her brand out there, the Kardashian Kollection founder – who shared a snap of herself getting her hair and make-up done via Instagram on Monday – is only picking work she loves.

She added: ‘2013 for me is about scaling back. I want to focus on the few projects that I'm super passionate about and not spread myself too thin.’

Design philosophy of unisex eyewear

In the eyewear market, some designers focus on enhancing female and male contrast in eyeglasses design, resulting distinguishable masculine and feminine glasses. These glasses follow two separate runways. On the other hand, lots of UNI SEX Sunglasses have still been around for decades and attract both men and women. Some optical stores even have exclusive unisex glasses sections. Unisex sunglasses Generally speaking, sunglasses tend to appear more frequently in unisex styles in a comparison with regular prescription eyeglasses. While choosing regular Rx glasses, male and female customers usually take their own tastes into account. This is widely justified by optical shops’ practice of grouping men’s glasses and women’s glasses. Sunwear products usually do not have such a clear difference or gap. The sunwear industry has witnessed for long the heyday of unisex styles. Unisex sunglasses have largely mixed colorful designs traditionall better vision, safety features, or cosmetic reasons. Slightly different from the design of unisex sunglasses, unisex specialty eyewear focuses mainly on visual performance and safety assurance. Both male and female customers are in need of these two benefits. Making a unisex frame attractive is a plus. Some lasting trends In general, most unisex eyeglass styles are neutral and there are actually some styling trends. Plastic frames in oval and elongated rectangular shapes are popular in unisex eyeglasses. The second trend is rimless and semi-rimless lenses in oval shapes. Retro, small John Lennon styles are also attractive both to men and women. Progressive shapes such as modified rectangle, bowtie and butterfly are appealing unisex styles. Titanium and stainless steel frames in clean and simple styles are also favorable unisex choices.

FA chief is 'sad' at Moore snub as West Ham fans join Peters to lay wreath at Upton Park statue on 20th anniversary of his death

West Ham and English football paid tribute to iconic captain Bobby Moore on the 20th anniversary of his death, as the FA finally conceded regret over his treatment while he was alive.

Hundreds of fans attended a wreath-laying ceremony at Moore's statue outside Upton Park, and the flag of St George was flown at half-mast for the Capital One Cup final at Wembley.

Moore, who led England to World Cup glory in 1966, was honoured 20 years to the day since he lost his battle with bowel cancer aged 51.

Former club and international team-mate Martin Peters was joined by West Ham co-owner David Gold in setting down a claret and blue floral tribute in the design of Moore's No 6 shirt, as his daughter Roberta and granddaughters Poppy and Ava watched on.

Another tribute depicting Moore's famous red England shirt was laid by his statue at Wembley in a ceremony attended by Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA's director of football development and former Upton Park hero.

The tributes will continue tonight during West Ham's Barclays Premier League clash with Tottenham. Prior to kick-off, a minute's applause will be held and fans will also be asked to display a special mosaic.

Moore, who won 108 caps at the heart of England's defence, only received an OBE during his lifetime rather than a knighthood and was never given any sort of role within the FA.

David Bernstein, FA chairman, yesterday expressed sadness at the way Moore was not welcomed into the organisation.

'The FA has been criticised over its treatment of Bobby once he retired,' he said. 'It saddens me that this is the case and while I am not privy to exactly what happened, it is clear the organisation could have done more. 'If Bobby were alive today I am sure we would have asked him to be the chief ambassador for the FA in its 150th anniversary year.'

Gold praised fans who braved bitterly cold weather to attend the service.

'They wanted to pay their respects to a man who we hold very dear at this club,' said Gold. 'This is our way of paying respect to an iconic footballer, who had personality, charm and modesty and is a legend.'

Meanwhile, Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has dismissed the statistical analysis so favoured by opposite number Sam Allardyce ahead of tonight's game.

'I don't believe in it,' he said. 'You always have to be very, very careful with statistics. It doesn't mean that we ignore them completely; we just don't use them to the extent that people might think.'

Thousands of British ski reps face losing their jobs after French court bans them from offering slope tours

Thousands of British ski guides could end up losing their jobs after being banned from showing guests around the French slopes.

A court in France has ruled that safety is compromised when tour operators provide holidaymakers with informal tours of the piste.

But a British ski company, which is to appeal the ruling, has said the court 'has taken the side of the locals and the protectionist agenda' of the French ski school, Ecole du Ski Francais.

A court in France has ruled that British ski hosts cannot show holidaymakers around the French slopesA court in France has ruled that British ski hosts cannot show holidaymakers around the French slopes

In the past tens of thousands of British holidaymakers have enjoyed the experience each winter.

They are shown around the resort and the best slopes and restaurants are pointed out.

The ski hosts did not take skiers on the most advanced runs and did not instruct.

Monday’s ruling in Albertville is being seen by British firms as a test case that threatens the future of ski companies offering such a service.

The court ruled that the practice breaks French law which cites that leaders of organised groups on the slopes must be qualified instructors.

French authorities, together with the ESF national ski school, singled out a British operator in Les Trois Vallees, Le Ski, which provided the service free of charge, and took it to court.

UK tour operators say they are bitterly disappointed by the decision to outlaw British tour operatorsUK tour operators say they are bitterly disappointed by the decision to outlaw British tour operators

The co-founder of Le Ski, Nick Morgan, has said he will appeal the ruling.

'As we expected, the court in Albertville has taken the side of the locals and the protectionist agenda of the ESF. We will be appealing and the case now goes to a court in Chambery. The fight goes on and we will take this all the way,' he said.

'We are determined to carry on and we are not prepared to see British ski hosting outlawed. By taking the British on in this way the French Authorities, and the ESF, have created a problem where there really wasn’t one.'

The dispute began when a ski host, employed by Le Ski, was stopped by police on the pistes in Meribel – a popular destination for British skiers, in Les Trois Vallees region.

The ski host was informed that his actions were illegal, and was told to report to the Courchevel police.

The French ski instructors’ union joined the French police in pressing charges.

Jean-Marc Simon, director of the ski instructors’ union, said at the time: 'This is purely about ski safety. We cannot have unqualified people taking groups of skiers around the mountain. We did not instigate this investigation, but as people responsible for mountain safety we must support the authorities.'

Other UK tour operators say they are bitterly disappointed by the decision.

Crystal Ski, the UK’s largest ski tour operator, said: 'Crystal Ski is disappointed with the court ruling, however, we are pleased to hear that the tour operator has decided to appeal.’

A statement from ESF read: 'ESF is committed to ensuring the safety of UK tourists using French resorts for wintersports.

'ESF reiterates its commitment to supporting the UK ski industry and will work with UK tour operators in finding workable solutions for lawful guiding on the French ski slopes.'

The current row is the latest in a long line of disputes between the French and British ski professionals. The French lost a long-running battle to prevent British-qualified ski instructors from teaching in their country in 2000.

Showing Harry what he's missing? Taylor Swift dazzles on the red carpet in flowing black gown with thigh high sheer panels at Brit Awards

With her ex-boyfriend Harry Styles in attendance, Taylor Swift made sure she showed him exactly what he was missing by making a showstopping entrance at the Brit Awards on Wednesday night.

The 23-year-old singer dazzled on the red carpet in a black Elie Saab gown, displaying two thigh-high sheer panels in the flowing floor-length skirt.

Taylor, who is nominated for the Best International Female Solo artist award, highlighted her trim waist with a gold waist belt with link detail.

The I Knew You Were Trouble singer had her dark brown locks in a straight and sleek style with her fringe framing her face, just above her eyes.

Underneath her dramatic gown Taylor stepped out in a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti heels for the occasion.

Not only did she opt for a simple but sophisticated look with her dress sense, Taylor also stuck to a subtle look with her make-up wearing heavy eyeliner, a golden glow on her cheeks and a natural lip.

While Taylor made sure she was looking sensational, the prospect of her bumping into Harry is minimal, given the pair are being kept apart by Brit bosses.

Its not clear what song Taylor will chose to perform at the show but she openly mocked Styles at the Grammy Awards by speaking in a British accent during her performance of We Are Never Getting Back Together.

She may well sing her break-up track or she could sing I Knew You Were Trouble, which is said to be about the One Direction star.

Eating chips more than once a week raises the risk of prostate cancer by a third

Men who eat fried foods more than once a week may increase their risk of prostate cancer by a third.

New research suggests that junk food staples such as chips, fried chicken, battered fish and doughnuts may play a significant role in the formation of aggressive and life-threatening forms of the disease.

Although previous studies have suggested poor diet can affect a man's chances of getting prostate cancer, this is the first to indicate that deep-fried convenience foods in particular pose such a big danger.

Eating deep-fried foods more than once a week poses a serious health risk for menEating deep-fried foods more than once a week poses a serious health risk for men

Results published in the journal The Prostate found snacking on deep fried foods at least once a week appeared to increase the risk of cancer by between 30 and 37 per cent compared to men who claimed to eat them less than once a month.

Nearly 40,000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year in the UK and 10,000 men die from it - the equivalent of more than one an hour.

The risks increase with age, with men over 50 more likely to develop a tumour, and there is a strong genetic element to it.

As with some other types of cancer, diet is thought to be a key factor in the development of the disease.

Last year, for example, a study found a diet rich in oily fish could slash a man's chances of dying from prostate cancer by up to 40 per cent, possibly because fish oil contains anti-cancer properties which slow the growth of malignant cells.

Previous studies have shown that eating foods cooked at a very high heat, such as grilled meats, could raise the risk of a tumour.

Large quantities of foods such as fried chicken have been linked with aggressive and life-threatening forms of cancerLarge quantities of foods such as fried chicken have been linked with aggressive and life-threatening forms of cancer

But given the level of consumption of deep fried take away foods in the UK, the latest findings suggest these are a much bigger threat to male health.

The market for fast-foods and takeaways in the UK is thought to be worth over £9 billion and is growing at an average of five per cent a year.

Experts at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle analysed data from two studies involving a total of 1,549 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and another 1,492 men of similar age and profile who were in good health.

All the participants, who were aged from 35 to 74, completed detailed questionnaires on their eating habits.

The researchers then made allowances for other factors that could influence the men's chances of getting prostate cancer, such as their weight, age, whether they had a family history of the disease and their racial background - as disease rates are higher among Afro-Caribbean communities.

They were then able to calculate the extent to which eating chips, chicken or doughnuts at least once a week affected cancer risk.

'This is the first study to look at the association between intake of deep-fried foods and risk of prostate cancer,' said Dr Janet Stanford, who led the research.

'The link appeared to be limited to the highest level of consumption - defined in our study as more than once a week.

'This suggests that regular consumption of deep-fried foods confers a particular risk for developing prostate cancer.'

The exact reason why favourites like chips and fried chicken might exacerbate cancer risk remains unclear.

One theory is that when cooking oil is heated to the kind of temperatures needed for deep frying, potentially carcinogenic compounds can form in the food.

One is called acrylamide, often found in chips or French fries. Others include two groups of chemicals called heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which can form in meat cooked at high temperatures.

Deep-fried foods are also very high in potentially harmful compounds called advanced glycation endproducts.

These have been linked with causing inflammation and cancer-like degradation of cells in the body.

A chicken breast deep fried for 20 minutes contains nine times the amount of these materials as a chicken breast boiled for an hour.

Cancer Research UK said it was too early to say for certain if there is a link between deep fried foods and prostate cancer.

Oliver Childs, senior science communication officer, said: 'It's clear that a healthy diet high in fruit, vegetables and fibre and low in red meat and salt is better for overall health than one packed full of greasy fast food.

'But from this study alone, we can't be certain if there's a link between fried food and prostate cancer.'

Dr Iain Frame, director of research at Prostate Cancer UK said: 'Although this study does indicate a small association between eating deep fried food regularly and increased prostate cancer risk, the results relied on asking men to recall how often they had eaten these foods in the previous three to five years.'

Kate puts her baby bump on parade as Prime Minister mauls best-selling author Hilary Mantel over 'plastic princess made for breeding' jibe

The Duchess of Cambridge yesterday admitted she was nervous about giving birth, as the Prime Minister stepped in to defend her against novelist Hilary Mantel’s ‘plastic princess’ attack.

Kate, who is more than four months pregnant, revealed her baby bump for the first time at a public engagement when she visited a treatment centre run by the charity Action on Addiction.

She spoke of her worries about the birth as she chatted to a group of women recovering from drink and drug addictions at Hope House in Clapham, South-West London.

Wearing a patterned wrap dress by upmarket High Street label MaxMara, the 31-year-old duchess seemed proud of her gently swelling stomach, holding it protectively.

Kate, who is patron of the charity, was asked about her pregnancy by recovering alcoholic, Lisa, as she sat at a table with women taking part in an art therapy class. The 34-year-old mother of three said: ‘I asked her if she was nervous about having a child and she said it would be unnatural if she wasn’t. It’s just human, isn’t it?’
Natalie, 28, a former drug addict and alcoholic, told the duchess about her own pregnancy.

‘I told her I’m expecting a baby at about the same time as her [in July]. She was saying she had been unwell but she was feeling better now.’

It was Kate’s first official engagement since before Christmas, when she spent time in hospital with a severe form of morning sickness.

It was always bound to attract huge public interest, but even the duchess could not have predicted just how much the spotlight would have been upon her.

Hours earlier the Mail reported comments made by double Booker prize-winner Miss Mantel in a lecture at the British Museum in which she described the future Queen as a ‘machine-made’ princess, ‘designed by a committee’.

But where the author described her as a personality-free ‘shop window mannequin’ with a ‘plastic smile’, thousands of Britons leapt to her defence saying the Duchess is a warm, intelligent woman.

Mantel, 60, compared Kate unfavourably to both Anne Boleyn – one of her historical heroines – and to Princess Diana, insisting both had more personality.

She said Kate had gone from being a ‘jointed doll on which certain rags are hung’ to a woman whose ‘only point and purpose’ was to give birth.

Mantel said Kate ‘appeared to have been designed by a committee and built by craftsmen, with a perfect plastic smile and the spindles of her limbs hand-turned and gloss-varnished’.

Now David Cameron, while on a trip to India, has waded into the row to support the pregnant Duchess.

He said that Hilary Martel is 'a great writer' but described her comments on Kate as 'a hurtful thing to say', according to reports.

He described the comments about the Duchess of Cambridge as 'completely misguided and completely wrong'.

'You can tell a lot about someone from the questions they ask and she asks really good questions, the questions of someone who wants to learn. She is also an intelligent woman.

'Having her as Patron of the charity draws attention to the cause of addiction as a whole, which is not always an easy subject.

'She is doing an enormous amount to reduce the stigma of addiction and increase understanding of it.'

Presenter Lauren Laverne came out in defence of the Duchess, Tweeting: 'I mean, I know she won that Booker and everything but if you can't say anything nice... #Mantel.

And businessman Chris Smith wrote: '#Hilary #Mantel seems to be looking for a bit of cheap publicity by taking pop shots at those people the public love! #cheapstunt'.

Eleanor Bennett wrote: 'That Hilary Mantel doesn't need to be such a boot towards Kate Middleton' while another user, David Ward, wrote: 'With friends like Hilary Mantel, who needs enemies'.

The Prime Minister told the BBC: 'What I've seen of Princess Kate at public events, at the Olympics and elsewhere is this is someone who's bright, who's engaging, who's a fantastic ambassador for Britain.

'We should be proud of that, rather than make these rather misguided remarks.'

The head of a charity supported by the Duchess of Cambridge has hit back at Hilary Mantel’s extraordinary attack on her, saying she is an 'intelligent' woman who is proving to be a huge asset to the causes she backs.

Nick Barton, chief executive of Action on Addiction, said the Booker prize-winning author was entirely wrong to characterise the Duchess as a clothes horse whose only purpose was to give birth.

Speaking ahead of a visit by the Duchess to Hope House, an addiction recovery centre for women in Clapham, south London, Mr Barton said: 'I can only speak of what I know, and having met the Duchess several times I find her to be engaging, natural and genuinely interested in the subject.

Twitter user Shahid Miah ‏wrote: '#HilaryMantel getting publicity 4 comments on Duchess of Cambridge. Yes, Duchess has 2 fake smile but everything else is surely genuine, no?'

The London Review of Books attempted to clarify the comments made by Mantel about the Duchess of Cambridge, saying the author was actually criticising the media and their portrayal of the Royal family.

What Mantel really wrote is about how the media make the royals suffer.

In her lecture's summary she said: 'I'm asking us to back off and not be brutes.'

The Duchess, who is almost halfway through her pregnancy, carried out her first official engagement of the year this morning when she visited Hope House, a 22-bed residential facility for women from all over the country to get over addictions to drugs and alcohol.

Action on Addiction is one of five charities of which the Duchess is patron, and she spent her time there speaking to women who are in recovery and congratulating those who are on the road back to sobriety.

Her visit came after the lecture, where Mantel said the Duchess was quite unlike Anne Boleyn, who was ‘a power player, a clever and determined woman.’

Mantel contrasted her appearance to Prince William’s mother, Diana, ‘whose human awkwardness and emotional incontinence showed in her every gesture’.

Mantel, the author of Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies, the acclaimed novels which detail the failure of Henry VIII’s wives to produce an heir, used a lecture to examine the prospects for the future queen consort.

Mantel said that when she first saw Kate Middleton, she struck her as ‘a shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own, entirely defined by what she wore.’

Prince William’s wife-to-be was as ‘painfully thin as anyone could wish, without quirks, without oddities, without the risk of the emergence of character’.

She added: ‘Presumably Kate was designed to breed in some manners.

‘She looks like a nicely brought up young lady, with “please” and “thank you” part of her vocabulary.’

Mantel spoke of Kate’s appearance in her first official portrait since marrying William, painted by Paul Emsley, which was unveiled last month.

She said: ‘Her eyes are dead and she wears the strained smile of a woman who really wants to tell the painter to bugger off.’

Mantel went on to say that female Royals were ‘at the most basic... breeding stock, collections of organs.’

St James’s Palace last week criticised a magazine for printing pictures of Kate’s baby bump taken during a break on the Caribbean island of Mustique.

And they were furious last year when pictures of her topless on holiday were printed in Italy – saying ‘a red line had been crossed.’

But Mantel suggested Kate could have few complaints about private pictures of her being taken on holiday – observing: ‘The royal body exists to be looked at.’

‘Some people find them endearing; some pity them for their precarious situation; everybody stares at them, and however airy the enclosure they inhabit, it’s still a cage.’

Mantel gave the London Review of Books lecture ‘Undressing Anne Boleyn’ at the British Museum on the February 4. The full version of her speech is to be published in the latest edition of the London Review of Books, out on February 21.

The Duchess has had thousands come out in support of her after Hilary Mantel questioned her character

Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, said Mantel’s comments were unfair.

She said that although Diana had at first seemed ‘bland’, later ‘we learned about all the troubles of her marriage and her personality began to shine through. Kate might yet come into her own.’

She added that Kate’s duties meant she ‘can’t do anything that might reveal (her) personality.

‘They have to be nice to everyone. They are probably stupefyingly bored but they can’t appear to be having anything other than a nice time.’

Kate returned to work today with the merest hint of a baby bump.

Battle of the bathing suit beauties! Kendra Wilkinson and Katherine Webb flash the flesh during diving practice for TV's Splash

After signing up for celebrity diving TV show Splash, both stars were certainly aware they would be flashing a fair bit of their enviable figures in a variety of bathing suits and diving attire.

And famous participants Katherine Webb and Kendra Wilkinson were confidently showing off their curvaceous figures during practice for the show on Monday.

It was very much a case of battle of the bathing suit babes as the stars flashed the flesh in revealing swimming costumes.

New celebrity Katherine recently spoke about why she signed up to the show.

'I thought it would be such a fun idea, crazy, to learn how to dive from a high dive,' she told Access Hollywood, although admits her training didn't initially go too smoothly.

'I think I face planted the other day,' she laughed. 'I was trying to flip off the dive and I ended up face planting and I come out of the water and I'm stinging all over. But hopefully nothing like that will ever happen again, so we'll see.'

The beautiful blonde was irate and furious over something and clearly wanted to make her point clear.

However, Greg remained calm and never lost his cool as Kendra let rip.

'I am happy to pay for something worth having': How will the big financial advice shake-up affect you - and what will it cost?

Tomorrow marks the biggest change for almost a decade in the way that financial advice is given.

The aim is to make advisers more professional and banish commissions that could influence the recommendations they make. The changes apply for any dealings that advisers have with clients from tomorrow onwards.

Financial Mail explains what to expect.

Happy to pay: Tim Summers with adviser Barry HornerHappy to pay: Tim Summers with adviser Barry Horner

What is happening?

The Financial Services Authority is introducing new standards. It is implementing the Retail Distribution Review – an overhaul of the rules that govern how advisers can work with their clients.

Linda Woodall, head of investment intermediaries at the FSA, says: ‘This is a very big change for the industry. It is all about putting customers first.’

What financial areas do the new rules cover?

Sales of, and advice on, most forms of investment. This includes pensions, unit trusts, Isas, venture capital trusts and enterprise investment schemes – and some types of life insurance that also have an investment element.

The review does not cover general insurance, mortgages or equity release – separate changes in mortgage advice and sales will be introduced in 2014. The changes apply when advice is given – when there is a personal recommendation made on what is right for you. Customers will still be able to buy products without advice through execution-only sales.

What is changing?

Three main areas: how advisers are qualified, what counts as independent advice, and how you are charged by an adviser. Fees will be the most obvious change for consumers from day one, with all advisers now levying a fee for their services.

Why will advice suddenly cost me money?

It has never been free, even though recent research by the regulator found almost half of people thought it was. Until now, advisers have been able to earn commission from the companies whose products they sell. This could be worth from three to seven or eight per cent of a lump-sum investment or up to the equivalent of two years’ premiums on monthly plans.

Commission meant that there was a clear incentive to sell new products and ‘churn’ policies, even when existing plans were effective. It also encouraged the sale of the highest commission-paying financial products, even though they might not be in the best interests of consumers.

Woodall says: ‘We’ve seen links between high levels of commission and mis-selling. ‘In the past, some advisers might have been tempted to recommend something that is not in the client’s best interest because of the commission. By moving away from commission, we remove that temptation.’

So how will I pay for advice?

Charges: Almost one fifth of the fees you pay the typical independent adviser now go on regulation and compensation chargesCharges: Almost one fifth of the fees you pay the typical independent adviser now go on regulation and compensation charges

There will be lots of options. You will agree the fee direct with the adviser, typically from a menu of charges. You could choose to pay a set rate (which might be anything from £100 an hour), a fixed fee for a project, a monthly retainer, or you might agree to pay a percentage of the money that you have invested through the adviser.

You can choose to pay the adviser direct, or you can agree ‘adviser charging’, where your fee is deducted from money you pay to an insurance or investment company. Either way, the adviser’s client agreement must make it clear exactly how much the fee is and what service you can expect in return.

Barry Horner, who runs Paradigm Norton Financial Planning in Bristol, says: ‘We have been charging fees since we set up back in 2001.

‘From the very start, we felt it avoided any conflict of interest that you might get from taking commission.’

Clients such as Tim Summers, 39, agree. The commercial solicitor from Bristol has been comfortable paying fees for the advice he gets. ‘I don’t mind paying for something that is worth having,’ he says.

‘As a lay person, it might be hard to judge the quality of the technical advice you are getting.

‘But what you can do is judge a financial adviser by how they treat you, communicate with you and by their business standards.

‘All that I have seen gives me confidence in dealing with an adviser I can trust.’

Tim meets a Paradigm Norton adviser about every six months and among other things Horner and his colleagues have helped Tim accelerate his pension saving.

What about qualifications?

The FSA has raised the bar for advisers. Everybody who wants to give advice must now be qualified to the national Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) level 4. This is equivalent to university degree level. Until now the minimum was QCF level 3.

Advisers have been working over the past two years to bring themselves up to scratch. Many have chosen to go further, working towards level 6 qualifications in specialist financial areas or becoming Chartered Financial Planners.

There are also new rules on professional standards. Advisers must comply with a code of ethics and complete a minimum of 35 hours a year of ongoing training to keep up to date. The regulator will police all this and issue each adviser with an annual ‘statement of professional standing’. Without it, an adviser cannot work.

Carl Lamb, managing director of independent adviser Almary Green in Norwich, says: ‘Raising the standards is a really good thing and it has shaken the industry from root to branch.’

What is happening to independent advice?

Only those who undertake a complete and full analysis of the whole range of products on the market that might possibly meet client needs will be able to call themselves independent. All other advisers will face restrictions. These might range from offering only one type of product from one company to a wide range of products from many different companies.

Advisers who specialise in certain areas, such as pensions, may still source products from across all the companies in that sector. They will be called restricted whole of market advisers.

Woodall says: ‘It is important for consumers to be able to be clear about the nature of the service they are getting from an adviser. We identified these terms by asking consumers what made most sense to them.’

Is all this good for consumers?

Karen Barrett, chief executive of online adviser search service Unbiased, says: ‘We should see adviser firms become more transparent on the cost of advice and more focused on what service they are offering.

‘We’re on the cusp of change and consumers are going to have to learn and adapt too. Maybe 12 or 24 months down the line it will feel normal to pay a financial professional for their time advising you, just as you would pay a dentist or solicitor.’

But others have raised concerns that many customers will not be able to afford fees, or will be unwilling to pay. A study by consultant Deloitte warned that as advisers moved upmarket up to five million people could be left without an adviser.

Hidden costs boost final bill

When you are writing out a cheque to pay for advice for the first time, don’t assume all the money is going to the person sitting across the table. The fee has to cover not just an adviser’s salary but the costs of running a business and a growing range of charges and fees for regulation and consumer protection.

Almost one fifth of the fees you pay the typical independent adviser now go on regulation and compensation charges. This includes annual fees to the Financial Services Authority. Part of this goes to cover the cost of running the Money Advice Service, which the Government has introduced to provide basic financial help for consumers but refuses to pay for from taxpayer resources.

They also have to fund the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, which pays out when a firm that has badly advised a customer is no longer in business or able to fund its own claims.

Advisers will pay about £120 million towards this compensation scheme this financial year alone, with the prospect of an extra top-up levy still to come. Carl Lamb at financial adviser Almary Green says: ‘Regulatory cost is one of the key issues facing all advisers. The biggest concern is the rapid rise in the compensation levy which leaves companies who have no involvement in poor practice picking up the bill for the mess others leave behind.

‘At the moment, we’re trying not to pass all these costs on to customers and we are doing our best to absorb them in the business. But that cannot continue for ever.’

Phil Mickelson won the Phoenix Open for the third time in his decorated career tonight.

The four-time major winner completed a wire-to-wire success on 28 under - the second-lowest total ever in a 72-hole tournament on the PGA Tour.

That was good enough to secure victory by four strokes from fellow American Brandt Snedeker, whose final-day 65 ensured Mickelson was never able to feel completely comfortable until the end.

From blinding headaches, to bleeding scalps and permanent baldness: The hidden dangers of hair extensions revealed

Hair extensions can add fullness and length to otherwise sad-looking locks, but the health hazards that accompany the popular Hollywood beauty treatment can far out-way the rewards.

From blinding headaches, to patchy hair loss and sometimes permanent damage, doctors are now warning about the dangers of hair extensions, the must-have accessory of celebrities on the red carpet, and young women alike.

Neurologist, Dr. Orly Avitzur of Terrytown, N.Y., who is also the medical adviser for Consumer Reports, told ABC News: 'I think the risk of baldness, if you start to get hair loss, that's really my bottom line, then stop immediately.'

Hair extensions, where synthetic or real hair is attached onto a person's existing hair or scalp by weaving, gluing, sewing or clipping it on, first became popular with actresses, but the treatment has quickly moved on to the mainstream.

Now thousands of young women are experiencing the dangerous side effects that come with trying to transform one's natural hair with longer and fuller hair pieces.

Beauty queen Amanda Jones, 26, tried hair extensions for two Miss Virginia competitions.

'After three weeks my scalp was red and bleeding. I lost a lot of hair'

When she had the extensions glued to her own hair, she said she suffered no damaging side effects, but last year, she tried she tried a different method and had them sewn onto her own hair.

'That was the most painful experience of my life,' Miss Jones said. 'I had them in for maybe three weeks. My scalp was red and bleeding. I lost a lot of hair.'

However Sadie Whitlocks, 25, told MailOnline that a friend's experience with glued-in hair extensions was also a disaster.
Permanent damage: Known as Traction Alopecia, the combination of weight and tension on the wearer¿s hair follicles can cause permanent damage and prevent hair regrowthPermanent damage: Known as Traction Alopecia, the weight and tension on the wearer's hair follicles can cause permanent damage and prevent hair regrowth

'She complained that they gave her headaches and after a while the synthetic locks got matted up. I had to cut them out leaving bald patches and they smelled really bad... they ended up like dreadlocks.'

One 46-year-old New York social worker, who prefers not to be named, said she ran to the doctor with blinding headaches.

After blood work and an MRI scan of the brain checked out as normal, there was no explanation for the sudden pounding in the patient's head.

She was sent to Dr Avitzur, who explained: 'When I went to examine her and simply touched her scalp, she pulled away and winced when my fingertips touched her quite gently.

'She had hundreds of these tightly braided hair braids. It was pretty clear to me that she did not need a work-up, but that she needed to remove her extensions.

'A lot of us do crazy things for the sake of appearance,' he added.

The procedure, costing anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand, can be successful, however it is important to make sure the stylist attaches the extensions using a method that is tailored to your specific hair type.

If they're attached too tightly, or weigh too much, problems can develop quickly.

The combination of weight and tension places strain on the wearer’s hair follicles, which are stretched to a point that the hair simply falls out. Known as Traction Alopecia, this can cause permanent damage to hair follicles and prevent hair regrowth.

Chicago cosmetologist Grace Santiler-Nowik, the president of the Professional Beauty Association's Professional Council, explained: 'It's not something you tread into lightly. People want their hair thick and long, but they forget there's a whole upkeep portion of it they have to maintain.'

Ms Santiler-Nowik emphasized that customers must return to the salon at regular intervals to have the extensions removed and replaced, and need to take a break from the hair pieces if they're causing damage to a person's hair.

'I think it's important for people to get education, there's always a safe way to do things and a smart way to do things,' she said.

Even Jennifer Aniston, who first gave the extensions a go as her character Rachel in Friend's, is weary of the procedure.

She told Harper's Bazaar: 'I decided to have a couple of extensions, never knowing you would end up with 400 things in your head that cause your hair to break off. Nothing destroys your hair faster than extensions.'

John Travolta's 'sexual assault' lawsuit dismissed by cruise ship worker Fabian Zanzi

A sailor who claims John Travolta sexually assaulted him on a cruise ship has dismissed his lawsuit.

The decision comes as cruise ship worker Fabian Zanzi realised that the legal battle was going to cost him in the regions of thousands.

Previously Zanzi had won a fight to have his case heard in court, but according to Radaronline, the actor had a motion pending before the court.

If it were granted, Zanzi would be forced to fork out $75,000 for a bond if the legal proceedings were to go ahead.

'My client and our firm are very pleased that Mr. Zanzi has agreed to dismiss the lawsuit,' Travolta's lawyer Marty Singer told RadarOnline.com.

The new legal proceedings come after it was revealed on Monday that Zanzi had succeeded in having his case heard in court.

The Saturday Night Fever star's legal team had tried to prevent it being heard on the grounds his ticket included an agreement to settle all disputes between a passenger and the cruise line in arbitration.

However, a federal judge dismissed the motion, saying there was no evidence Zanzi was bound by the arbitration agreement between Travolta and Royal Caribbean International.

According to TMZ, that meant the legal fight could go to trial unless a settlement is reached.

This is common in cases where one side wants to avoid a public trial, and this decision effectively drives up the price of any potential out of court agreement.

The accuser: Former Royal Caribbean employee Fabian Zanzi went public with his accusations in MayThe accuser: Former Royal Caribbean employee Fabian Zanzi went public with his accusations last May

Travolta's attorney Singer previously filed court documents requesting the lawsuit by former Royal Caribbean employee Zanzi be dismissed and that he be forced to pay for legal fees.

In the papers the Get Shorty favourite admitted to being on the 2009 cruise, but denied all claims of misconduct.

As Mail Online previously reported, Zanzi made his shocking claims in May, alleging the incident occurred when he worked as a room service operator for Royal Caribbean International in 2009 and made a delivery to the actor's stateroom.

He was among a steady stream of men to step forward last year with accusations against the star including three masseurs and a gym employee.

Zanzi claimed Travolta favourite asked for a neck massage, and that when he reached over to comply the 58-year-old actor dropped his robe and exposed his erect penis.

The Chilean-born worker, who was suing for unspecified damages, says he resisted, and then Travolta offered him $12k to keep silent.

It emerged Zanzi never mentioned many of the details when he went to cruise ship management to complain, and claimed they refused to allow him to write any details regarding nudity or sexual contact.

And Mr Travolta's lawyer Marty Singer drew attention to this in a strongly worded statement.

He said: 'This is another ludicrous lawsuit with inane claims. It is obvious that Mr. Zanzi and his lawyers are looking for their 15 minutes of fame.

'The lawsuit’s ridiculous claims are completely contradicted by what Mr. Zanzi told his employer back in 2009 when he was being disciplined for his own violations of company policy.

'In his handwritten report three years ago, the only physical contact he claimed occurred was allegedly touching my client’s neck.

'The inappropriate conduct he alleges in his lawsuit is absent from his written report he submitted at the time. That glaring omission speaks volumes.
Brushes off the allegations: Travolta and wife Kelly Preston were the picture of domestic bliss on the red carpet in Los Angeles on 25 June Brushing off the allegations: Travolta and wife Kelly Preston put on a brave face on the red carpet in Los Angeles last June

'Also calling his credibility into question is his dubious allegation that his employer supposedly restrained him in a room on the cruise ship for five days, yet after that supposedly occurred, Mr. Zanzi continued to work for Royal Caribbean for years, on multiple ships.

'Now, after waiting three years, and after getting paid to tell his story to the media, Mr. Zanzi has filed this absurd lawsuit.

'We are confident that my client will prevail on the merits and that he will be completely vindicated in court.'

Mr Singer was referring to an employee discipline form where it is stated Zanzi admitted to superiors at Royal Caribbean International he rubbed the Look Who's Talking star's neck, but turned down his request that he return later.

Armani Mens Watches - Style and Class: It's All on the Wrist

Accessorizing has two extremes in the world of men’s fashion: understated elegance, and overstated flamboyance. For those who prefer a subtle addition to their already-fashionable lives, there is no better option than Men Armani Fashion watches . From understated leather bands to white gold and everything in between, Armani’s watches are a dose of instant class and elegance for the discerning male buyer.

Armani’s mens watches come in a variety of styles, including both leather and gold bands, as well as everything from simple timepieces to sportier watches with built-in stopwatches and timers. On the low end, one can expect to pay roughly $200 for the least expensive Armani men’s watches. The prices move upward from there, depending on the band and the features of the watch, topping out around $600.

For durability as well as eye-catching style, nothing beats a white gold band. Armani excels in this particular space, offering a wide variety of styles and price points. Their more athletic stylings feature a date tracker as well as a timer which captures seconds and milliseconds. More basic models (for the minimalist in all of us) simply feature the clock, with hour, minute, and second hands. And while these watches don’t do as many things as their athletic counterparts, there’s something to be said about doing one thing and doing it well — while looking good.

Armani’s leather bands are crafted with Italian leather, as any seasoned shopper would expect. These bands, too, accompany both athletic and minimalist faces, and come in a stunning black as well as a rich mahogany color that is not to be missed.

Every Armani watch comes with a two-year limited warranty that covers both the band and the face of the watch, as well as the crystal on the face of the watch. Service is provided free for life on any minor adjustments to the watch — such as battery replacements or adding/subtracting links from the wristband. Those services make Armani men’s watches a truly wonderful value. A one-time watch purchase comes with peace of mind that will follow with the watch for the duration of its use.

And the true style of these watches cannot be overstated. They are not “trendy” watches, but “stylish” watches. Unlike many fashion retailers who sell brightly-colored, trendy watches that will not be worn six months from now, Armani’s selection is classic and will fit well with any outfit, any style, any time from now until well into the future.

When buying a watch, it’s important to keep in mind that this is an accessory of high value; and it should maintain its value over time. It should also be durable and made of only the highest-quality materials. Armani ensures both, and backs that up with a two-year warranty and free service. Combined with the gravitas of the Armani name, they are a truly unbeatable value and a requirement for any man who wants to take the easy path to sophistication and high-class style.

Break-up threats hit banks' shares as investors take fright at Chancellor's plans to shore up the financial sector

Shares in Britain’s leading
banks fell on Monday night after Chancellor George Osborne threatened to
break up any that fail to reform, amid fresh scandals and rows over
bonuses.

Bank shares
had a strong run in 2012, largely thanks to the initiatives taken by
Mario Draghi, the European Central Bank supremo, to shore up the single
currency. But Osborne’s pledge to ‘electrify’ the ring-fence separating
banks’ casino activities from their high street savings and loans
operations could have serious consequences – particularly for RBS and
Barclays, which have sizeable investment banking arms.

Lloyds is more focused on consumer and business banking while HSBC’s operations cover a wide international spread.

Storm brewing: Investors took fright at George Osborne's latest plans to shore up the financial sector

Osborne’s move sparked an
embarrassing public difference of opinion between Anthony Browne, chief
executive of the British Bankers’ Association, and one of the
association’s most prominent members, Lloyds Banking Group, down 0.98p
to 50.66p.

Lloyds’ chief Antonio Horta-Osorio,
who is still considering whether to sacrifice his bonus, told MPs on
Monday that he had not been informed by the BBA of its planned attack
on the Osborne reforms. The lobby group said the Chancellor’s clampdown
would hurt banks’ ability to raise capital.

Lloyds is not badly exposed to the
Libor scandal but may have to increase the amount it has earmarked for
mis-selling interest rate swaps from £90million to more than £200million.

Royal Bank of Scotland, where shares
lost 11.9p to 328.6p, is expecting to announce penalties of around
£500million over Libor-rate rigging shortly, possibly as soon as
tomorrow. Osborne has ordered the state-backed bank to pay the fine out
of its bonus pool for investment bankers so taxpayers do not suffer from
its misdeeds. The pool, however, is unlikely to be big enough to cover
the whole penalty.

RBS is reducing the size of its
casino banking operation and is expected to announce the resignation of
the division’s chief, John Hourican, in the wake of the Libor scandal,
despite the fact he was not appointed until 2009, after most of the
misdeeds were done.

Barclays, whose shares dropped 8.5p
to 291.5p, is embroiled in an investigation over whether it lent money
to Qatari investors who backed a 2008 capital-raising without disclosing
it.

Antony Jenkins, the new Barclays
boss, has agreed to give up his bonus, as has RBS’s Stephen Hester.
HSBC, down 13.5p to 706.1p, has not disclosed whether chief executive
Stuart Gulliver will give up his bonus as atonement for the
money-laundering scandal that hit the bank last year.

Tiffany Money Clips watches grew fastest

"It's a revolution," said Stanislas de Quercize, president and chief executive officer of Van Cleef & Arpels. "Women are interested in watches like never before."

Demand for the most expensive Tiffany Money Clips watches grew fastest in the U.S. last year, according to LGI Network LLC, a market intelligence firm that specializes in tracking luxury sales. Sales of women's watches retailing above $25,000 grew 15 percent, representing 21 percent of the entire market. Sales of women's watches between $3,000 and $5,000 increased 7 percent and during the last two years, sales of women's Tiffany Necklaces over $25,000 have advanced 35 percent.

Data like this suggest that women are ditching cheaper quartz models in favor of sophisticated mechanical pieces. Although the industry has yet to accept that idea - many manufacturers think Tiffany Pendants interest in mechanics will prove but a flash in the pan - several key players have seized the moment to introduce serious pieces with women in mind.

Patek Philippe created a perpetual calendar wristwatch for women, Zenith introduced tourbillons - one of horology's most sophisticated movements - and Tag Tiffany Rings has reported strong business with its chronographs for women.

"We should adapt better to women and not the other way around," said Jean-Claude Biver, ceo of Hublot, which this year is introducing a smaller sized Big Bang directed at women. "[Women] have their requirements, taste and representation of what a watch should be."

De Quercize of Van Cleef & Arpels said, "Women today want mechanical complications, but they want complications that are made for them."

Van Cleef last year introduced so-called poetic Tiffany Sets on wristwatches, which include the likes of a rotating sun and moon, as a way to give a feminine twist to intricate mechanics.

"The watch industry has been very macho and has mostly considered women as an afterthought," de Quercize said. "Women won't tolerate that approach anymore."
