Sir Alex Ferguson's eye for a player
is matched by his nose for a fine wine and the Manchester United manager
compared a couple of his favourites this week.Fergie
is famous for having a nice bottle in his office for opposing managers
visiting Old Trafford but he'll probably keep his '61 Petrus for only
the most special guest.That
was the vintage Ferguson used to
describe Cristiano Ronaldo - who is a target again for United after
leaving in 2009 - when asked what the Real Madrid star would be
if he were a bottle.
The '61 Petrus is a Bordeaux vineyard that can sell for tens of thousands of pounds - in case you didn't know.If Ferguson has a couple in his collection he'll know when to get rid - he sold Ronaldo for £80million, cashed in on David Beckham in 2003 and has been investing in wine for years.
He knows his stuff: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson compared Cristiano Ronaldo to a fine wine
With this in mind, Sportsmail had grape fun composing a list of Premier League players and the wines to match.
Ryan Giggs – A vintage bottle of 1973 Port that seems to get better with ageFernando Torres – An overpriced bottle of Prosecco – promises so much with the price-tag, ultimately fails to deliver.
Michu – Spanish Rioja – can be seriously under-priced, but can surprise you with being as good as anything else on the market.Peter Crouch – a Nebuchadnezzar - a big bottle of champagne that sometimes is a bit flat.
Ages very well: Manchester United veteran Giggs
It costs how much? Chelsea striker Fernando Torres
Lukas Podolski – A German Riesling – A fine white wine, the underdog that is just trying to prove itself.Mark
Cheeky number: Swansea sensation Michu has been value for money this season
Schwarzer - A rich bottle of Australian Chardonnay – A woody taste
that stays in your mouth and just goes on and on and on and on and on
Yaya Toure – A heavy bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon – Smash a load of these back and you’ll wake up with one hell of a headache.Jermain Defoe – shot of Jaegermeister – Lots of shots and eventually one of them will get you drunk!
One that'll put a smile on your face: Arsenal's Germany forward Lukas Podolski
Strong stuff: Man City midfielder Toure
Small but effective: Spurs striker Jermain Defoe
