'I wouldn't call it a brave choice': Cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge on Angelina Jolie's mastectomy

When Angelina Jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy in February, many publicly heralded her bravery.

The 38-year-old Oscar winner possessed the BRCA-1 gene, which gave her an 87 percent chance of breast cancer.

But breast cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge, who also has the 'faulty' gene mutation, felt very differently.

'I wouldn’t call it the brave choice.
I actually think it’s the most fearful choice you can make when
confronting anything with cancer,' the 52-year-old rocker
told The
Washington Blade
.

'That choice is way down the line on
the spectrum of what you can do and [considering] the advancements we’ve
made in things like nutrition and stress levels.'

The Oscar-winning singer, famed for her raspy vocals, successfully underwent five rounds of chemotherapy in 2005.

'My belief is that cancer comes from
inside you and so much of it has to do with the environment of your
body,' Melissa told the gay publication.

'It’s the stress that will turn that
gene on or not. Plenty of people have the gene mutation and everything
but it never comes to cancer.'

Now that she's been cancer-free for nine years, Etheridge completely understands why she got cancer.
